Rubicon Technology Opens State-of-the-Art Sapphire Polishing Facility in Malaysia
Rubicon Technology, a leading provider of sapphire substrates and products to the LED, RFIC, Semiconductor, and Optical industries, today announced the opening of the company's first facility outside of the United States in Penang, Malaysia. The state-of-the-art facility will be responsible for the labor-intensive crystal polishing processes significantly expanding Rubicon's capacity for high quality, large diameter polished wafer production.

LG Innotek and Zumtobel Group Conclude LED Cooperation Agreement

Soitec and Sumitomo Electric Announce Collaboration on Development of Engineered GaN Substrates
Soitec, the world’s leading supplier of engineered substrates and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., a leading worldwide provider of compound semiconductor materials, announced today they are working together to develop engineered gallium nitride (GaN) substrates. The alliance will draw on Sumitomo Electric’s sophisticated GaN wafer manufacturing technology and Soitec’s unique Smart Cut™ layer transfer technology by which ultra-thin GaN layers are transferred from a single GaN wafer to produce multiple, engineered GaN substrates. The engineered substrates retain the original, high crystalline quality of Sumitomo Electric’s GaN wafer at a lower cost. This technology will therefore facilitate widespread use of GaN substrates in applications like high brightness LEDs as well as electric power devices designed for hybrid and full electric vehicles.

WalesOnline.co.uk Announced £5.1m Deal from Enfis to Take over PhotonStar
SWANSEA-based lighting technology company Enfis has announced plans to acquire LED firm PhotonStar in a £5.1m deal. The company intends to finance the deal with a placing of 5m new shares and is looking to raise a further £2m with the placing of a further 19.79m shares. These placings will need to be approved by a meeting of shareholders on December 23.

Optogan Opens Largest LED Production in Eastern Europe
Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Ivanov today unveiled Optogan’s new manufacturing plant in St. Petersburg. With an overall investment of 3.35 billion rubles (80 million euros) it is the largest LED component and module factory in Eastern Europe & CIS. The factory, which will employ up to 800 people, covers 15,000 m2 of floor space 5,000 m2 of which is taken up by a clean room environment. The first production line has an annual production capacity of 360 million LEDs and further capacity extensions are scheduled.

Panasonic Electric Works Vossloh-Schwabe GmbH (head office: Lüdenscheid, Germany, CEO: Klaus Breisch) established a new company in Svilajnac, the Republic of Serbia, to manufacture energy-efficient electronic devices for lighting equipment. The new company is named Panasonic Electric Works Vossloh-Schwabe Serbia d.o.o. The investment amount in the financial year 2010 is approx. EUR 580,000. Mass production will commence in January 2011, to enhance lighting device business in Europe, where energy efficiency improvement efforts are well under way.

Tridonic Fürstenfeld Launches into the LED Era
The Tridonic production plant in Fürstenfeld, which manufactures magnetic lighting components and is part of the Zumtobel Group, is launching into the LED era and today commissioned its first LED assembly line. The highly automated line represents an initial step towards the volume production of innovative LED chains. Plans envisage commissioning up to three more LED assembly lines by 2013. Annual production capacity is slated to reach 12 million LED modules. The new LED assembly lines represent a total investment of EUR 1.5 million. The plant offers space for expansion to as many as six assembly lines. Production of special LED light engines for use in chiller cabinets has already begun.

First Pilot Production Line for Organic LEDs to be Installed in Germany
Osram and its LED-affiliate Osram Opto Semiconductors are driving the technology shift on the lighting market and currently building a pilot line for organic LEDs (OLEDs) in Regensburg, Germany. "We hold a leading position in the young and promising OLED market," said Martin Goetzeler, CEO at Osram. "We want to use the pilot production line to extend our lead and quickly forge ahead with development of the technology and prepare for mass production." In the next three years around 50 million euros will be invested in the new pilot production facility and in research on LED applications. Commissioning of the production line is scheduled for mid-2011.
