Intuitive Interaction: Ultra-compact Infrared LED from Osram Enables Gesture Control in Car Interiors

Automotive interior design is currently undergoing a fundamental change. Displays are getting larger, the number of manual controls is decreasing, and customizable lighting solutions are creating a feel-good atmosphere. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and technologies previously designed for mobile devices – such as facial recognition, eye tracking or gesture control – are increasingly making their way into the automotive sector. These technologies are based on infrared light. The smaller and more powerful the required components, the easier they are to integrate into complex designs. Measuring Uniformity of LED Luminaires in Seconds: MKS Announces Ophir® FluxGage™ 604 Measurement System

MKS Instruments, Inc. (NASDAQ: MKSI) has announced the Ophir® FluxGage™ 604 compact measurement system for LED luminaires. This new series features four additional color sensors evenly arranged in the bottom of the device delivering further x,y, and CCT data as well as the illuminance. Within seconds the user gets an overview of the color and overall uniformity of the measured light. This allows direct evaluation of LED chips or optical assemblies used for color mixing and beam shaping within the design process in order to find the optics that provide the optimal light for a particular application. The system can also be used in end-of-line LED luminaire production applications to instantly detect issues, ensuring high quality product standards are met. Executive Summary on "A Study on the Perception of Full Spectrum LEDs" Published

From a LED producer's perspective, it is essential to have knowledge about the perception of LEDs by human beings. To consolidate existing and gain new knowledge on recently introduced Full Spectrum LEDs, which claim to bring natural light quality into electric lighting appliances, the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (Germany) conducted a study in cooperation with three main LED manufacturers Nichia (Japan), Seoul Semiconductor (Korea), Toshiba Materials (Japan) and the LED gear supplier Lumitronix (Germany). This year, Ruairí held two lectures at TiL in which he emphasized how important a thorough application of light is in respect to culture, ethics, and environment.
