Aledia Makes Its First LEDs on 8-Inch Silicon Wafers Using Cost-Disruptive Microwire Technology
Aledia, a developer of LEDs based on disruptive microwire GaN-on-Silicon technology, announced today that it has made its first LEDs on 8-inch (200mm) silicon wafers. The cost of Aledia’s LED 3D chips based on microwires is expected to be four times less than traditional planar (2D) LEDs. Additionally, Aledia announced its first-round financing totalling €10 million (approximately $13M) with leading US and European investors, which was closed in 2012. Read more »

LED Light Bulbs Recalled by Lighting Science Group Due to Fire Hazard After receiving 68 (=0.12/mill) reports of LEDs overheating, the Lighting Science Group has recalled 554,000 lightbulbs sold under the brand names Definity, EcoSmart, Sylvania, and Westinghouse. Included in the incidents were eight that resulted in damage to light sockets, fixtures, rugs, carpet, floors, circuits or lamps. The Lighting Science Group is offering new bulbs to buyers.
